An initiative of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University, the Design Studio is a studio for the creation of ethics and civics resources, at all educational levels: K-16, post-graduate, and lifelong learning. The studio supports faculty projects ranging from Embedded Ethics, which includes ethics modules in computer science courses, to Scientific Citizenship, which helps graduate students in the natural sciences learn how to participate in public affairs, to the DKP initiative, focused on K-12 civic education.
The DKP partnered with the History and Social Studies Department and 5th grade educators in the Cambridge (MA) Public School District starting in 2019 to create 5th grade curricular units aligned with the Massachusetts History and Social Studies Frameworks and Standards. CPS History and Social Studies Department Coordinator Adrienne Stang is a lead author of the curriculum.
One of our fifth grade units, “Expanding Liberty, Equality, and the Suffrage- 1776-1924”, is now available to all educators.
Together, the DKP and Cambridge Public Schools worked on these resources over the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years to complete the unit in Summer 2021. In this unit, students explore three social justice movements prior to the Civil War. First, they study enslavement and the antebellum abolition movement. They then explore the Mashpee Wampanoag’s struggle for sovereignty. Lastly, they learn about the women’s suffrage movement. This unit prepares students for later investigations into the civil rights movement and the other movements for social justice that it inspired.
